tree

Our original idea was to paint an apple tree in the corner of her room that the crib was going to go in. But how cool would it be to build a 3D version! The idea was to build it out of the 3/4" styrofoam-like sheets that are used for insulation on homes. It was impractical to make it a solid piece of foam - it would get a little heavy, plus it would cost a lot for that much foam. I wasn't confident that I could build a hollow tree without some sort of guide so I modeled the tree on the computer first. This picture shows the final version of the tree as it would appear in the room. The canopy was made by globbing together a bunch of small spheres to make a big "lumpy" sphere, which has a radius of about 3 feet. The green and salmon colors are the walls. The ceiling is beveled, which is the purple section shown in the picture. To create the outlines, I "sliced" the computer model every 3/4".
